Therapy can give you support, validation, coping skills, and strategies to update your perspective or change your behaviours. It can give you a better understanding of yourself and your relationships. It can give you greater peace of mind and help you tolerate difficult feelings and situations. Therapists help clients facilitate their own healing process. They provide feedback, guidance and psycho-education, rather than advice or answers. My process is collaborative. You are the wise and capable guide of your life and I will meet you where you are, with the support that best matches your needs.
Here are some questions to consider prior to therapy:
— Why am I reaching out now? Has a situation or something specific prompted me?
— If I’m new to therapy, what am I hopeful for? Worried about?
— If I’ve been to therapy before, what was helpful? What wasn't?
— What am I looking for in a therapist?
— What do I want to get out of therapy? What are my goals?
Reflecting on these questions will help you gain clarity about what's important to you, and also help you find the right therapist.
Once they start, it’s not unusual for clients to spontaneously share, “I feel lighter”.
In the beginning, we identify what you want to get out of therapy. What are your goals? We begin there and fine-tune along the way. Sometimes homework will be suggested. Therapy is most effective when you take what you learn in session and apply it to your daily life. It is very individual. For some, a short period is all that's needed and for others, therapy begins a process that takes longer.
